Obituary

Joe Toney Cheshier, age 85, of El Dorado, AR, made his final trail ride from Timberlane Health and Rehab to his eternal heavenly home, on April 2, 2022. He was born July 7 th , 1936 in Star City, AR. He was predeceased by his wife of nearly 60 years, Billie Margaret Edwards, his brother Rommie Carroll Cheshier, and his parents, Rommie and Lela Cheshier.

He graduated from Star City High School in 1953. He later attended Arkansas A&M at Monticello, where he ran track and worked on the college farm, milking cows. He later enlisted in the Army on July 25 th , 1955, stationed in Fort Gordon, GA. He was honorably discharged on July 24, 1957.

He married his high school sweetheart and homecoming queen Billie Margaret on December 10, 1955 (he was team captain and quarterback). She was the absolute love of his life. He is survived by their 4 sons – Greg (Kelly) of Lincoln, AR, Doug (Beth) of Fleetwood, N.C., Roger (Sarah) of El Dorado, and Paul (Hope) of Decatur, AL, 13 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and a great multitude of friends and family.

His hobbies were trail riding, team penning, raising Quarter Horses and years and later on he raised Walking and Saddle horses, aw well as  cattle goats. He is famous in Union County for bringing "fainting" goats from TN in the early 1970's. He also enjoyed hunting, especially deer hunting with dogs, along with his good hunting friends Carey Clark, Joe Mangum, and Wesley Webb, at Hillsboro and Briar Patch Hunting Clubs.

He served as a member of the Union County Mounted Patrol, as a volunteer deputy during the 1960's. He was also a long-time member of Union County Farm Bureau and the Cattlemen's Association. He also supported the Union County Jr. Livestock Sale for over 40 years, serving as ring man and always helping young people get a good price for their steer, hog, etc.

He was a retail store manager for Firestone in Camden and El Dorado. He later was co-founder of Union Tire Company. He is best known as founder of Joe's Tire Service along with business partner, J. E. Moore, in 1974. His son Roger now owns and operates it just like Joe T. did with motto "Home of the Quick Tire Change."

His customers and friends found him the same all the time – tremendously outgoing and friendly, while being a tire expert, with a "tire for every road, load and condition." He made buying tires a very enjoyable experience not only for him but his many, many customers. They got "free entertainment," so to speak when they visited the store. There never was a better story-teller and jokester than Mr. Joe, as many affectionally called him.

The most noteworthy attribute of his life is when he received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior in 1976 at 40 years old. Anybody that knew him before then could see how God made a "new man" out of Joe, after that decision.

He began serving God by serving others. He was a member of Marrable Hill Chapel for over 40 years, where he served as Elder and Sunday School teacher, Evangelism Explosion trainer, and bus driver, bringing teenagers from all over Union County to Youth Group meetings.

He also served on the board of Victory Bible Camp for many years and contributed much of his time and money. He had a huge heart for teenagers and wanted them to come to know Jesus at an early age. He spent tireless hours mowing grass and other duties. He truly loved those kids and the camp!

He was a member of Gideons International and was a Gideon speaker, telling others of his testimony and raising funds to buy bibles to be sent all over the world.

He served veterans for several years by volunteering his time by driving a bus to carry veterans to the VA hospital in Little Rock regularly.

Many times, he would cross paths with hurting people and would always pray for them on the spot. He was a PRAYER WARRIOR. He loved and cared for all people - not just his friends, but people he had never met before. God brought many to the tire store that needed help. He would not only pray for them but he also generously "put feet on his prayers."

He called them "divine appointments!" He would say "You never know what a day might hold". After his morning Bible reading and daily prayer with Tom Loftin on the phone, he would anticipate how God might use him each day.

Finally, he was most famous for the "Jesus Loves You" stickers that he ALWAYS had with him to offer people. Joe T. lived to acknowledge God in his daily life, just as it states in Proverbs 3:5-6, "…. in all your ways acknowledge Him and he shall direct your paths."
