Obituary

Major (Ret.) Victor Lee Calloway, age 95, was born August 7, 1928, to the late Raleigh Joe Lee and

Naughvell Futch Calloway in Laran, Union Parish, Louisiana.

He left for his Heavenly Home on May 24, 2024, at the family home in Strong, Arkansas.

He was the second son and 7th of 12 siblings.

He was preceded in death by parents; siblings Chlorene Jones, Sallie Ham, Allie Cantley, Clarence Calloway, Leola Burns, Billy Ray Calloway, Wayne Calloway, and Elaine Dees; along with five nieces and five nephews.

He is survived by three sisters Sudie Garner of El Dorado, Arkansas, Martha House

of Huntsville, Alabama, and Joann Smiley of Shreveport, Louisiana; one sister-in-law Elouise

Calloway of Crossett, Arkansas; six nieces and fourteen nephews; along with several great and

great, great, nieces and nephews plus a host of friends and relatives.

Victor, having completed his first career as a cotton farmer, left the family farm in

the Laran community shortly after his 18th birthday for a career in the U.S. Army. He

served a few years as an enlisted soldier reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant before

being appointed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. After a year there and

because of a minor birth defect in his shoulder left him unable to continue cadet training.

He was advised to transfer to Officer Candidate School, which he did. Six months later, on April 10th, 1952, he became a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. After completing finance

school was assigned to a post in Korea. He later served on a post in the Boston

Massachusetts area. Several years later in November of 1966, he retired from the

military to make his home in Boston and worked about 30 years with a bank there,

retiring from Bank of America in the late 90's. He loved Boston and was very

knowledgeable in the history as well as the things available to folks in the city. He was a

patron of the Boston Symphony and held season tickets up until he left Boston in 2023

to return to the family home in Strong. Victor was a member and regular attender at the Old South Church located in the downtown historical district of Boston. This church dates back to the early 1600s. A chaplain there, Karin Wetmore has continued checking on and ministering to Victor even after his move to Arkansas.

Victor never lost his passion for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He

was a regular at the home football games at West Point and was very passionate about

the Army Navy game. He was allotted up to 8 tickets to the game each year and tried to

bring members of his family to attend those games. Victor was an avid collector, as he

liked to refer to himself, of antiques acquiring collections of various works of art,

glassware and other types of collectables. He loved sharing his collections with his

family.

A graveside service in his honor will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, June 1, 2024, at Strong Cemetery, 971 Huttig Hwy, Strong, Arkansas.
